Weathering the Storm through a Cybersecurity Perspective
With the recent weather events hitting Texas and now bearing down on Florida, we here at DefenseStorm thought we would share some friendly cybersecurity reminders to consider before, during, and after the storm to keep your network as safe as possible.
Proper backups – We can’t stress the importance of proper backups enough. This can be the difference between a slight disruption or a major outage. Scan and backup all relevant documents to ensure they are properly encrypted and store off-site if possible.
Remote work – These days several companies have revised versions of the motto commonly attributed to the post office “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds”. While we understand that remote work is required to stay competitive, please remember to NEVER use a public wifi connection without a VPN connection. This information can be captured and do enormous damage to your company and client.
Beware of scams – While times of tragedy seem to bring communities together and really show the best of the American spirit, it also brings out the worst in others. Beware of scams that can come in many forms. One example often advertised on social media are phishing employment opportunities , these are phishing attempts to get your information by promising jobs paying large amounts of money with little experience required, remember if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Data is NOT worth your life. While we understand the dedication and commitment I.T. staffs typically have towards their networks, we must remember that the data we protect is NOT under any circumstances worth your life. Always remain safe and never put yourself or any coworkers at risk to protect data.
